چکیده

Stem rust caused by Puccinia graminis f.sp tritici Erik. & E. Henn. is a highly destructive disease of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The effects of fungicide application on stem rust (Puccinia graminis tritici) epidemics and yield of three bread wheat varieties varying in reaction to the disease were studied in two major wheat growing and stem rust prone districts (Agarfa and Sinana) of Bale, Ethiopia. Disease onset was late, generally after ear emergence, at both locations; but stem rust severity increased at high rates and terminal severity levels up to 81, 72 and 37% at Agarfa, and up to 37, 32 and 14% at Sinana were recorded on the varieties Sirbo, Maddawalabu and FH4-2-11, respectively. The rates of infection and AUDPC values of stem rust on the varieties were significantly (P<0.05) reduced by the fungicide sprays. The disease resulted in relative grain yield losses of up to 29% at Agarfa and 22% at Sinana on unsprayed plots. Thousand kernel weight reductions of up to 25.4% at Agarfa and 19.2% at Sinana were recorded. Generally, only the weekly fungicide application gave nearly complete control

Farmers' perceptions on improved bread wheat varieties and formal seed supply in Ethiopia

The paper presents smallholder farmers' perceptions on attributes of bread wheat varietiesbased on primary data collected from 524 households in four major wheat growing areas ofEthiopia. The results indicated high value of attainment indices for improved varieties comparedto landraces, which shows how the demanded attributes are embodied more in improved ones.Grain yield and yellow and stem ru...

The emergence of Ug99 races of the stem rust fungus is a threat to world wheat production.

Race Ug99 of the fungus Puccinia graminis tritici that causes stem or black rust disease on wheat was first detected in Uganda in 1998. Seven races belonging to the Ug99 lineage are now known and have spread to various wheat-growing countries in the eastern African highlands, as well as Zimbabwe, South Africa, Sudan, Yemen, and Iran. Because of the susceptibility of 90% of the wheat varieties g...

Effect of yellow rust disease on agronomic and physiological characteristics of winter and facultative bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars

To investigate the effect of yellow rust disease on some agronomic and physiological characteristics of bread wheat cultivars, two field experiments were conducted in Agricultural Research Station of Miandoab in West Azerbaijan, Iran, in 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 cropping seasons. Experimental treatments were arranged as factorial in randomized complete block design with three replications. Treat...

شناسایی جدایه های Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici با بیماریزایی برای ژن مقاومت Sr31 در استان های غربی ایران

Stem or black rust of wheat, caused by Puccinia graminis Pers. f. sp. tritici Eriks. and Henn (Pgt), was the most feared and devastating disease of wheat at one time worldwide. The fear from stem rust was understandable because an apparently healthy looking crop about 3 weeks prior to harvest could reduce to a black tangle of broken stems and shriveled grain by harvest. The disease has been co...

Impact of Climate Variability on Cool Weather Crop Yield in Ethiopia

The research examined effect of climate variability on yield of the two dominant cool weather cereals (wheat and barley) in central highland and Arssi grain plough farming systems of Ethiopia using eight round unbalanced panel data (1994-2014). The stochastic frontier model result revealed that production inputs for producing wheat and barley in the two farming system had significant effect. Cr...
